CASTLE OF NICOTERA
The byzantines since VI century a.C. were the first to build fortified centers ( Kastron or castrum ) choosing places on high ground, exploiting the natural morphology of the landscape, above all to protect themselves and control the surronding territory from the threats carried by the external population. The Byzantine fortification therefore had a strategic military-political logic, then the arrival of the Normans during the XI century, highlighted the conception of territorial power distributed among the various comites , wich had occupied numerous important cities. SHORT HISTORY - In last byzantine phase (IX-X century a.D.) the roman city of Nicotera ( Nicotrum ) was moved on the high places, then the Normans (1065) moved the city again to hygher hills areas, builted at the top of the hill also a large manor to accomodate a large military troop. position Nicotera to the left of the image you can see the castle other view at the bottom of the sea (foto tratta da Mapio) th
